*MORE INFO ON DD-214: Beginning in the 1950's, veterans were issued "DD-214" papers, or often referred to as "Separation papers" or "discharge papers". These must be submitted with the application. If you've misplaced your DD-214, the VA may have a copy on file if you have or are currently receiving disability or education benefits. If your DD-214 papers are not on file, ask for them to provide a Statement of Service, which can be used instead of a DD-214. Full instructions on how to request military records can be accessed by clicking here.
